The Diaries of Victor Klemperer
I Shall Bear Witness 1933-1941
By Victor Klemperer · 2006
Back to CatalogueThese diaries, kept by a Dresden scholar of French literature who was classified as Jewish, record daily life under the National Socialist regime from 1933 through the war and the city's destruction. Klemperer notes decrees, house searches, forced labour, the protection of a mixed marriage, rumours, and the changing language of public life, as well as meals, illness, and reading. The volumes are a contemporaneous private chronicle rather than a memoir written afterwards. They are a personal record of persecution and survival in one city, not a general military history of the war.
