These three wartime books, written between 1941 and 1944, are a correspondent's account of the North African campaigns from the Italian invasion of Egypt to the Axis surrender in Tunisia. Moorehead follows Wavell's early victories, Rommel's advances and retreats, El Alamein, and the final drive from east and west, and he interleaves headquarters briefings with the look of desert columns and ruined towns. Generals, ordinary soldiers, and the reporter's own journeys, including detours beyond Africa, share the narrative. The trilogy is eyewitness campaign reportage, not an official staff history.
