By Edward Gibbon · 1990

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This concluding volume of Gibbon's history, completed in 1788, follows the last centuries of the Greek empire and the fate of the city of Rome. It treats civil wars among the Palaeologi, the Mongol and Timurid shocks to the wider East, the Ottoman rise, the siege and fall of Constantinople in 1453, and the medieval papacy's hold on a diminished Rome. Gibbon closes with a survey of the city's ruins and the causes he has traced through the whole work. The volume is narrative history of empire's last acts, not a biography of any single sultan and not a guidebook.
