The Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire VII

The Normans in Italy and the Crusades

By Edward Gibbon · 1989

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This volume follows later medieval collisions between Latin Christendom, the Greek empire, and Islam: the Norman conquest of southern Italy and Sicily, the First Crusade and its successor expeditions, and the Comnenian attempts to hold Anatolia and the Balkans. Gibbon narrates popes, princes, and soldier-adventurers as much as emperors, and he shows Constantinople bargaining with Western armies it cannot fully control. The book is a history of crusade and Norman state-building on former Roman ground, not a complete history of medieval Europe.
