An Eyewitness History of the Crusades
The First Crusade 1096-1099
By Various Contributors · 2004
Back to CatalogueThis is a compilation of contemporary accounts of the crusades to the eastern Mediterranean, arranged as a consecutive history from the First Crusade through the loss of the last Frankish holdings in the late thirteenth century. The extracts come from Latin, Old French, Greek, Arabic, and other medieval witnesses: chroniclers, soldiers, and writers on the Christian and Muslim sides. They cover the capture of Jerusalem, the Latin states of Syria, later expeditions, and the sack of Constantinople. Brief linking commentary sets the documents in order. The work is a source-book of crusading, not a single modern narrative voice.
