Published in 1951, this detective novel confines Inspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard to a hospital bed, where a portrait of Richard III starts him investigating the murder of the Princes in the Tower. Using books, copies of documents, and research by a young American, Grant tests the Tudor account against fifteenth-century evidence and the motives of Henry VII's circle. The action is argument and reading rather than pursuit. The book is a historical inquiry cast as a police procedural, not a biography of Richard and not a battlefield novel of the Wars of the Roses.
