Synopsis
Published in 1973, this fantasy novel begins on Midwinter Eve as Will Stanton, turning eleven in a Thames Valley village, learns that he is the last of the Old Ones, guardians of the Light. Over the twelve days of Christmas he must gather six Signs while the Dark rises in snow, flood, and the figure of the Rider. Merriman Lyon, the Walker, and Will's ordinary family stand at different distances from the struggle. Time, weather, and English folklore press on a single holiday. The book is a seasonal quest narrative, not a school story and not a war chronicle.
