Published in 1879, this Trollope novel moves between the Dorset estate of Scroope and the cliffs of County Clare. Fred Neville, a cavalry officer who becomes heir to an earldom, courts Kate O'Hara, who lives in isolated poverty with her mother near Moher. The old earl and the women of Scroope demand that Fred not marry an Irish Catholic of no fortune; Kate's mother and the local priest press him to keep his word after seduction and a pregnancy. The novel is a short tragedy of rank and obligation: a man caught between a title and a promise made on the western coast.
