First published in 1951, this narrative history follows 617 Squadron of the Royal Air Force from the design of Barnes Wallis's bouncing bomb through the May 1943 night attack on the Mohne, Eder, and Sorpe dams, and on to later precision operations, including attacks on the Tirpitz. Brickhill recounts training at low level, the raid itself, losses, and the squadron's subsequent special-weapon work. Guy Gibson and his crews are the principal figures. The book is a campaign account of one bomber unit, not a full history of the air war over Germany.
