The Daily Life in Ancient Rome
People and the City at the Height of the Empire
By Jérome Carcopino · 2003
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1939, this study reconstructs ordinary life in Rome at the height of the Empire, chiefly in the age of Trajan and Hadrian. Carcopino describes streets, apartment blocks, and aristocratic houses; the Roman day from morning salutatio to baths and spectacles; schooling, marriage, and the legal position of wives and slaves; trades, food, and dress; and public religion alongside private cult. The evidence is drawn from literature, law, and remains of the city. The book is social history of a capital at its peak, not a narrative of emperors and wars.
