This history retells the Crusades, from the first Frankish arrival in the late eleventh century to the fall of the last coastal strongholds, using Arab and Muslim chroniclers such as Ibn al-Athir, Usamah ibn Munqidh, and later Mamluk writers. Maalouf follows the shock of the First Crusade, the Frankish states in Syria and Palestine, the recovery under Zengi, Nur al-Din, and Saladin, and the later campaigns that ended Latin rule. Motives of holy war, faction, and alliance appear on both sides. The book is a narrative from the invaded societies' sources, not a full history of medieval Islam.
