The Crucible of the Middle Ages
The Ninth and Tenth Centuries in European History
By Geoffrey Barraclough · 1998
Back to CatalogueThis history interprets the ninth and tenth centuries as the period in which Carolingian Europe broke into distinct political societies. Barraclough follows the collapse of imperial unity and the different responses of West Francia, East Francia, Italy, and Anglo-Saxon England to Viking, Magyar, and Saracen attack. He traces the rise of local lordship, fortified places, and new royal houses, and he argues that later medieval kingdoms took their shape from these emergencies. The book is an interpretive survey of institutions and invasion, not a chronicle of every reign and not a general history of the whole Middle Ages.
