In the late 1930s, sixteen-year-old Billy Parham leaves a New Mexico ranch with a trapped she-wolf, intending to return her to the mountains of Mexico. The journey becomes a crossing into a country of horses, priests, gypsies, and armed men, and later he returns south with his younger brother Boyd. The novel follows the brothers' losses of animals, kin, and bearings across a border that will not restore what they try to carry home. It is the second novel of McCarthy's Border Trilogy, a narrative of passage and aftermath rather than a conventional adventure of the range.
