This is a collected volume of traditional wonder tales gathered from many countries, including Hungary, Russia, Finland, Iceland, Sicily, and Tunisia, and retold in English for a general reader. The pieces are independent stories of youngest sons, enchanted animals, cruel stepmothers, and bargains with supernatural helpers or enemies. Settings shift from forests and palaces to islands and mountain kingdoms; there is no frame narrative binding them. The book is one of the coloured fairy-book anthologies of international folktales, first issued in 1903, not a novel and not a study of folklore method.
