The Cretan Runner
History of the German Occupation
By George Psychoundakis · 2009
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1955, this memoir recounts George Psychoundakis's work as a runner for the British resistance on Crete after the German airborne invasion. A shepherd from the mountains, he carries messages, gold, and wireless parts between villages, caves, and landing beaches, working with Allied officers hidden in the hills. The narrative follows night marches, hunger, betrayal, and the occupation's reprisals as well as the daily life of a village at war. It is a first-person account of courier work in an occupied island campaign, not a staff history of the Battle of Crete.
