A Christmas Carol
Being a Ghost Story of Christmas
By Charles Dickens · 1970
Back to CatalogueOn Christmas Eve in nineteenth-century London, the miserly counting-house owner Ebenezer Scrooge refuses charity, bullies his clerk Bob Cratchit, and dismisses his nephew's invitation. The ghost of his dead partner Jacob Marley, bound in chains forged in life, warns him that three spirits will come. They lead Scrooge through his neglected past, the Cratchit household and other present lives, and a future in which his death is unmourned. First published in 1843, the novella follows how those visions press on a man who has made isolation and profit his creed, and what he does with that knowledge.
