Kafka's unfinished novel, published in 1927, follows Karl Rossmann, a young European sent to the United States after a scandal at home. He arrives in New York, is taken up and then cast off by a wealthy uncle, and drifts through hotels, country houses, and a great Theatre of Oklahoma that promises work to all. He meets a bullying stoker, the servants Delamarche and Robinson, and the singer Brunelda. The America of the book is an invented landscape of offices, corridors, and sudden dismissals. It is a picaresque of exile in which every offer of help becomes another form of capture.
