This collection gathers the twenty short stories in which Jane Marple, an elderly resident of St Mary Mead, solves crimes by matching them to village behaviour she has already seen. Several pieces are evenings of the Tuesday Night Club, where a retired commissioner, a solicitor, and others recount unsolved cases and Marple names the missing motive or method. Later stories send her into country houses, seaside rooms, and parish business: a hurried will, a dismissed maid, a stranger dying in a church, a Christmas household that hides a killing. Raymond West, the Bantrys, and Sir Henry Clithering recur. The volume is a set of independent puzzles, not one serial case.
