This novel is narrated by Patrick Bateman, a young mergers-and-acquisitions man in late-1980s Manhattan who records restaurant reservations, brand names, and office rivalries in the same flat tone he uses for fantasies and acts of extreme violence, mostly against women. Colleagues are interchangeable; identity is a matter of cards, suits, and videotapes. The city is a sequence of apartments, clubs, and cash machines. Whether every atrocity is committed or imagined is left unstable. The book is a first-person monologue of consumption and sadism, not a detective novel and not a documentary of Wall Street.
