Synopsis
This collection brings together Gogol's Ukrainian village tales and his Petersburg stories. The Dikanka and Mirgorod pieces mix fairs, Cossack households, witches, and the historical novella of Taras Bulba. The city stories follow clerks, officers, and dreamers through Nevsky Prospect, a nose that lives on its own, a stolen overcoat, and a diary that slides into madness. Official rank, gossip, and the grotesque do the work of plot. There is no single hero. The volume is a gathering of short fiction and novellas, not a novel and not the plays.
