Published in 1922, this is a collection of comic short stories set at a golf club and narrated largely by the Oldest Member, who waylays listeners with cautionary tales. The title piece follows Cuthbert Banks, a golfer who takes up literature to impress a young woman in a pretentious artistic circle, then wins her by a display on the course. Other stories concern hackers, champions, husbands, and rivals whose characters are revealed by how they play. There is no continuous plot. The book is light club fiction about golf as a social test, not an instruction manual.
