The Claverings

By Anthony Trollope · 1994

Synopsis

Serialized in 1866-67, this novel follows Harry Clavering, a young man trained as an engineer who once loved Julia Brabazon. Julia jilts him to marry the wealthy, brutal Lord Ongar. Harry then becomes engaged to Florence Burton, sister of his employer. When Ongar dies abroad, Julia returns rich and miserable and draws Harry back into a half-promise that wrecks his standing with the Burtons. Around them, Sir Hugh Clavering and other county figures pursue money and marriages. The plot turns on whether Harry will keep faith with Florence. The book is a novel of courtship and conscience, not a political parliamentary tale.
