After a prison term, Shadow Moon is released into the company of the grifter Mr Wednesday, who is recruiting forgotten immigrant gods for a coming war in contemporary America. Across motels, small towns, and a lakeside settlement, Shadow meets figures from Norse, African, Slavic, and Egyptian belief as they compete with newer deities of media, technology, and credit. Wednesday's plans, Shadow's dead wife Laura, and the question of what Americans actually worship drive the plot. The book is a road novel and a confidence game: a fantasy about belief as a form of power rather than a single-myth quest.
