This sequence of seven children's novels, published in the 1950s, is set mainly in Narnia, a land of talking beasts, living trees, and contested thrones, entered from England through wardrobes, pictures, and other thresholds. In the first tale four siblings help the lion Aslan break a witch's winter. Later volumes follow a talking horse's flight to the north, a sea voyage toward the world's end, a prince's struggle for his throne, the making of Narnia itself, and a last war for the country. English schoolchildren, Narnian kings, and ordinary talking animals share the adventures. The books are fairy-tale novels with a Christian moral pattern, not one continuous chronicle from a single narrator.
