Published in 1964, this children's adventure follows Commander Caractacus Pott, an inventor living near the Dover road with his wife Mimsie and twins Jeremy and Jemima. After he sells a whistling sweet, he restores a battered racing car that the family names for the noise of its engine. The car begins to act on its own, sprouting wings to leave a traffic jam and becoming a hovercraft when the tide traps them on a sandbank. In France the Potts find a gun-runners' store and the children are kidnapped. The novel is a family chase built around a willful machine, not a spy story.
