This is an English version of the thirteenth-century Mongol chronicle known as the Secret History, or Golden History, of the Mongols. It follows Temujin's childhood after the murder of his father, the years of abandonment, the alliances and wars that unified the steppe peoples, and the founding of the empire that later generations called Chinggis Khan's. Kinship, betrayal, and the laws of the new state occupy as much space as battles. The narrative is a dynastic origin story composed near the events, not a modern biography written by the khan himself.
