Synopsis

Published in 1839, this novel follows Fabrizio del Dongo, a young Lombard noble who slips away to fight at Waterloo, then returns to a life of church office, love, and prison under the petty court of Parma. His aunt Gina, Duchess Sanseverina, and the minister Count Mosca manage his career while Fabrizio is drawn to the jailed Clelia Conti. Police intrigue, a fortress tower, and the rules of a small absolutist state drive the plot. The book is a political love story of Restoration Italy, not a campaign history of Napoleon.
