First published in 1970, this history surveys the Celtic-speaking peoples of Europe from their Iron Age emergence through Roman contact and into the early medieval west. Chadwick treats archaeology and classical notices of Gaul and Britain, then the societies of Ireland, Wales, and Scotland that left laws, poetry, and saints' lives. Language, kingship, and the church are central; there is no single political narrative. The book is a synthesis of Celtic studies, not a national epic and not a picture book of La Tene art.
