This volume pairs Conrad's 1895 novel Almayer's Folly with the 1898 stories later gathered as Tales of Unrest. The novel follows the ruined trader Kaspar Almayer on a Borneo river as his daughter Nina chooses a Malay prince over his European dreams. The shorter pieces move among Malay waters, a Breton village, an African trading post, and a strained London marriage, treating isolated Europeans and local people in situations of fear, racial contempt, and failed intimacy. Across the book, nerve and loyalty give way in river stations and domestic rooms. It is early Conrad in two forms: one river tragedy and a set of tales of unrest.
