Synopsis
First published in 1966, this military history follows Napoleon Bonaparte from the Italian and Egyptian commands through the Consulate and Empire to Waterloo. Chandler analyses organisation, marches, and the major battles - Rivoli, Austerlitz, Jena, Friedland, Wagram, Borodino, Leipzig - with maps of corps movements and notes on the armies opposed to him. Politics appears as the frame for operations rather than as the main subject. The book is a staff study of Napoleonic warfare across two decades, not a private biography.
