Synopsis
Written in the second century, this history of Alexander the Great draws mainly on the lost accounts of Ptolemy and Aristobulus. Arrian follows the Macedonian king from the Danube and the destruction of Thebes through the invasion of Asia, Issus, Egypt, Gaugamela, the pursuit of Darius, the Indian campaign, and the return. He pauses to judge Alexander's decisions, the treatment of cities, and the mutinies. Geography and logistics receive as much attention as set battles. The book is a military narrative of one reign, not a life of the Persian court.
