Synopsis
First published in 1903, this novel follows Buck, a large dog stolen from a California estate and sold north during the Klondike gold rush. In the Yukon he learns the "law of club and fang" under successive masters: the competent mail drivers Perrault and Francois, a brutal trio of incompetents, and finally John Thornton, to whom he gives fierce loyalty. The wilderness, wolf howls, and the work of the sled pull him away from domestic life. The book is an animal adventure about adaptation and mastery, not a handbook of dog training.
