In a mist-covered Britain after Arthur's wars, the elderly Britons Axl and Beatrice leave their warren-like village to find a son they can barely remember. On the road they meet the Saxon warrior Wistan, the boy Edwin, who has a wound that draws ogres, and the aged knight Gawain, still bound to a task from Arthur's day. A she-dragon's breath is said to cause the land's forgetfulness. The novel asks what peace costs when memory of slaughter returns. It is a quest romance about remembering and forgetting, not a history of post-Roman Britain.
