Published in 1962, this novel continues the life of Theseus after his return from Crete. He rules Athens, takes the Amazon Hippolyta as companion, and later marries Phaedra, while the bull-cult and the sea remain the measures of his luck. Campaigns, the birth of Hippolytus, and the strain between a king's public duty and the gods' claims occupy the middle of the book. The narrative is first-person, in the voice of an aging Theseus looking back. The work is a historical novel of Bronze Age kingship, not a children's myth book.
