The Brownings

A Biography Compiled from Contemporary Sources

By Joanna Richardson · 1986

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This biography of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning is assembled largely from their letters and from the comments of friends, family, and reviewers. Richardson follows Elizabeth's invalid years on Wimpole Street, the secret courtship, the flight to Italy, the marriage in Florence and later London and France, and the two careers in print. Household money, illness, and the upbringing of their son appear beside the writing of the poems. The book is a dual life compiled from contemporary voices, not a critical edition of the verse.
