First published in 1904, this volume in Andrew Lang's coloured fairy-book series collects wonder tales from a wide geographic range: Native American, Australian, African, Persian, Indian, and European sources among them. Typical pieces involve youngest children, shape-changers, animal helpers, and tests set by witches or kings. Lang and his collaborators retell the stories in a uniform English for young readers rather than preserving each teller's dialect. There is no connecting frame. The book is a miscellaneous anthology of traditional narrative, not an original cycle and not a folklore monograph.
