Published in 1880, this novel is set in a provincial Russian town and concerns the father Fyodor Pavlovich and his sons Dmitri, Ivan, and Alyosha, with the servant Smerdyakov at the edge of the household. Money, a rivalry over Grushenka, and Ivan's arguments about God and justice press on the family as the old man's murder approaches. Alyosha moves between the monastery of Elder Zosima and the town; Dmitri careers between passion and debt. The book is a novel of family crime and belief, not a detective story in the English sense.
