Synopsis
This family biography reconstructs the lives of Patrick Bronte and his children in Haworth and elsewhere from parish, school, and publishing records and from the surviving letters. Barker follows the Irish and Cornish parents, the early deaths, the years at the parsonage, the brief time in Brussels, and the writing and publication of the novels and poems of Charlotte, Emily, Anne, and Branwell. She treats rumour and later legend with caution. The book is a documented group life, not a critical study of any one novel.
