First published in 1819, this novel is set in late-seventeenth-century Scotland after a change of political fortune. Edgar, Master of Ravenswood, last heir of a ruined house, loves Lucy Ashton, whose father, Sir William, now holds the Ravenswood lands. Lady Ashton works to break the match and force Lucy toward a politically useful husband. The old keep, a prophecy, and the feud between the families press on the lovers. Caleb Balderstone, the loyal steward, tries to hide the household's poverty. The book is a historical romance of family ruin and coerced marriage, not a chronicle of the Union.
