In a small street in Nazi Germany, Death recounts the childhood of Liesel Meminger, a girl given to foster parents Hans and Rosa Hubermann after a journey in which she begins to steal books. Hans teaches her to read in the basement; stolen and borrowed volumes become her private education. The Hubermanns hide Max Vandenburg, a Jewish fist-fighter, while Himmel Street lives under rallies, air-raid sirens, and the ordinary cruelties of the regime. Liesel's friend Rudy Steiner and the mayor's wife, who owns a library, enlarge her world. The novel is a wartime story of literacy and shelter, told from the edge of the grave.
