Shakespeare's comedy, first printed in the 1623 Folio, follows Helena, a physician's daughter, who loves Bertram, the proud young Count of Rousillon. After she heals the King of France with her father's remedy, the king grants her Bertram as husband; Bertram flees to the wars in Italy and sets impossible conditions for acknowledging the marriage. Helena pursues him and, with the Florentine Diana, uses a bed-trick to meet those conditions. The play is a problem comedy about rank, consent, and a woman who claims a husband who does not want her, ending in a forced reunion rather than an easy match of minds.
