The Book of the New Sun

By Gene Wolfe · 2019

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This science-fantasy sequence follows Severian, an apprentice of the torturers' guild in the city of Nessus on a far-future Urth whose sun is dying. Exiled after showing mercy to a prisoner, he wanders north with the executioner's sword Terminus Est, encountering rebels, actors, the Autarch's court, and relics of vanished ages. Memory, identity, and the ethics of punishment shape the first-person narrative as much as the journey. The four volumes form one novel of apprenticeship and succession. The work is a dying-earth romance, not a contemporary thriller.
