John Grady Cole, sixteen and newly dispossessed of the Texas ranch he expected to inherit, rides south into Mexico with his friend Lacey Rawlins in the years after the Second World War. They work horses on a great hacienda, and Cole falls in love with the owner's daughter, Alejandra, against her family's will. A third rider, the volatile boy Jimmy Blevins, draws them into theft, pursuit, and imprisonment. The novel is a western about crossing a border that still has its own law, and about what a young man who lives by horses owes to love, honour, and the land he can no longer claim at home.
