Synopsis
This history narrates the South African War of 1899-1902 between Britain and the two Boer republics. Pakenham follows the political crisis over the Transvaal goldfields, the sieges of Ladysmith, Mafeking, and Kimberley, the conventional battles of the first year, and the later guerrilla phase, farm burnings, and camps. Soldiers, politicians, and Boer commandos are treated as actors in a single campaign rather than as types. The book draws on letters and archives from both sides. It is a military and political narrative of one war, not a general history of southern Africa.
