First published in 1935, this history traces Europe from the death of Theodosius in 395 to the death of Charlemagne in 814. Moss sets the late Roman world against the Germanic peoples, then follows the clash that produced successor kingdoms in the West. A second movement treats Justinian's Constantinople and his wars in Italy and the East. A third describes the rise of Islam, its conquests, and the culture that followed. The last part turns to the Franks, the papacy, and Charlemagne's reconstruction of a western empire. The book is a cultural and political survey of the centuries in which medieval Europe took shape, not a chronicle of any one reign.
