This selection of short stories by H. H. Munro, who wrote as Saki, draws on the Edwardian and early Georgian volumes that introduced Reginald and Clovis Sangrail. Typical pieces set talking cats, invented scares, and pitiless children loose in country houses, London drawing-rooms, and Balkan-flavoured sketches. Hostesses, aunts, and political hostesses are outmanoeuvred; animals and small boys administer the moral. The humour is dry and often lethal. There is no continuous novel-length plot. The book is a sampler of satiric short fiction, not a war memoir and not the full run of Munro's three short novels.
