Synopsis
First published in 1865, this children's novel follows Alice, who falls down a rabbit hole after a waistcoated White Rabbit and finds herself in a country of changing size, talking animals, and broken rules. She swims in her own tears, attends a mad tea-party with the Hatter and the March Hare, plays croquet with the Queen of Hearts, and is called as a witness at a trial over tarts. The Cheshire Cat, the Caterpillar, and the Mock Turtle offer riddling talk rather than help. The book is a comic dream narrative, not a schoolbook of logic.
