The Bayeux Tapestry and the Norman Invasion

By Unknown · 1973

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

First issued in 1973, this volume pairs a modern historical introduction with a translation of William of Poitiers's eleventh-century account of Duke William's claim and the 1066 campaign, then presents colour photographs of the entire Bayeux embroidery with English captions for the Latin inscriptions. The prose sections set out the succession crisis after Edward the Confessor, the competing authorities, and what the hanging can and cannot confirm. The plates carry the pictured story from Harold's voyage to the death of an English king. The book is a documentary companion to the invasion, not a novel and not a full biography of William I.
