The Bayeux Tapestry
Life Story of a Masterpiece
By Carola Hicks, Sylvette Lemagnen · 2016
Back to CatalogueThis book combines a history of the Bayeux embroidery with a scene-by-scene reading of its narrative. Carola Hicks traces how the hanging was made in the eleventh century, how it was lost and rediscovered, and how later regimes used it as evidence or propaganda. Sylvette Lemagnen then walks the viewer through the pictured story of Harold, William, the Channel crossing, and the battle of 1066, attending to Latin tituli, borders, and repairs. Colour plates support the commentary. The volume is a historical and iconographic study of one artefact, not a general military history of the Norman Conquest and not the tapestry itself.
