This sequence of six novels, issued between 1855 and 1867, is set in the fictional English county of Barsetshire and its cathedral city. The Warden and Barchester Towers treat a church living, a reforming press, and the arrival of Dr Proudie and the chaplain Slope. Doctor Thorne, Framley Parsonage, and The Small House at Allington turn to money, entail, and marriage among country families and junior clergy. The Last Chronicle of Barset follows the poor scholar Mr Crawley under a charge of theft. Recurring figures include the Grantlys, Mr Harding, and Lily Dale. The set is social comedy of the Anglican establishment, not a single continuous mystery.
